Darkness Over Pendle was a one act play directed and devised by Graeme Hammond based on the events surrounding Pendle Hill, the Lancashire site long linked with paranormal activity and most famous for the series of witch trials in the early 17th century.
It told, in brief form the story of “Old Demdike”, Elizabeth Southerns, the Device family and the Nutter family – others were involved historically, though in the abbreviated form it simplified the numerous people involved – and their feuds which in turn led to the execution of 12 “witches of Pendle forest”.
The play was later revived and performed with a new cast in a slightly different format as part of a historical weekend at the riverside in Huntingdon in 2010.
